Got holy spirit?

The most common response I get from defenders of the bible centers around the argument that states, "You must be guided by the holy spirit in order to understand the bible".

Others tell me that some older translation is without error and that to clear up my cloudy understanding of the modern text, all I need do is learn ancient Greek, Hebrew and get ahold of some original manuscripts- then it will all become clear.

Well, if that's true, my question is, "Why?"

Those people telling me that don't actually read original texts in Greek. How did they arrive at this perfect understanding? And why would an omniscient god bury such important information in such obscurity? Doesn't my eternal soul depend on understanding this stuff?

So what if my only means of understanding the word is through modern English translations? If those versions are full of errors, does god just hate English-speakers?

Now back to this holy spirit guidance thing. If that is true then I am truly out in the cold. No- wait a minute. I used to believe this crap. So the holy spirit must have at one time favored me and blessed me with understanding- only to pull the plug.

Funny that it just so happened to coincide with a time in my life when I was both ignorant and credulous. Once I started looking at things as an adult, the holy spirit just couldn't keep up, I guess.

That premise is like saying you have to believe in order to believe. That's not logic, that's a tautology.
